Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city, is set in an attractive green valley right at the country’s heart. With a population of around 325,000, it lacks the sky-scraping proportions of the world’s premier capital cities, but it’s certainly Namibia’s largest urban area, and the main point of international entry. Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and modern amenities abound, making Windhoek a great place to rest and stock up on diesel and supplies before or during a self-drive adventure into Namibia’s more remote areas.
There’s plenty to do in and around Windhoek. Guided walks around the city, with its relaxed pavement cafes, colourful street vendors, and scattering of German colonial architecture are interesting and informative, as are visits to The Natural History Museum and The Owela Museum, where visitors learn about Namibia’s culture and traditions. The delightful and well-kept National Botanic Gardens are well worth a visit and further afield, the Avis Dam provides opportunities for mountain biking, canoeing, fishing (seasonal), and birdwatching. Horse-riding excursions are also possible, along with cultural excursions to local townships and villages.
Windhoek is a busy but relaxed capital city, offering travellers a convenient departure point to Namibia’s wilderness areas, or the perfect base for some comfort, culture and respite from the road aftern an adventure in Namibia's wilderness.
