Stretching out between Etosha and Windhoek, the rolling hills of Namibia’s Central Highlands are dotted with large family farms, lodges, and guesthouses, many of which provide welcoming short-stay accommodation for travellers en-route elsewhere. Genuine Namibian hospitality is the hallmark of this region, and guests often share home-cooked meals with their hosts, or participate in visits to traditional Herero villages, thus gaining real insight into rural Namibian life.
The Central Highlands are known for their lovely walking trails. Hikes are possible from many locations in the area, but arguably the best routes are to be discovered in the beautiful Waterberg Plateau Reserve. Numerous guided or unguided walks lead either gently along the foot of the plateau, or more strenuously up to the top. Due to its relatively inaccessible nature, the plateau has long been a place for the rehabilitation of rare wildlife species such as black and white rhino, and is home to a host of birdlife, along with lizards, antelope, buffalo, leopard, and cheetah. Game drives are possible, but the density of the surrounding bush means the experience will lack the impact of more traditional game viewing safari options such as those offered in Etosha National Park, so it’s probably best to explore on foot.
While the Central Highlands may not be one of Namibia’s most compelling destinations, visitors will enjoy welcoming pit-stops here, providing respite from Namibia’s characteristically long drives, and offering the chance to get out on foot and discover local culture.
