The majestic Fish River Canyon lies deep in Namibia’s southern reaches. The vast proportions of this geological natural wonder, with its 550m deep crater, staggering rock formations and towering cliff faces, are perhaps rivalled only by the USA’s famed Grand Canyon. The canyon’s development began some 500 million years ago, and the relics of Stone Age dwellings have been discovered in its depths.
Many visitors choose to enjoy the spectacular views from the various look-out points around the Crater’s rim, while others are drawn to the good selection of hiking trails within the Canyon itself. Trails range from gentle hikes to the extremely demanding five-day self-guided trek which traverses the full length of the Canyon. The Fish River flows along the valley floor from January to April each year, meaning parts of the crater floor can be lush at times, and sulphurous hot springs bubble year-round. Depending on the season, some of the Canyon’s northern lodges allow guests to drive down, swim, and picnic at the riverside.
Although well-nigh impossible to spot, antelope, kudu, mountain zebra and leopard dwell here, along with herons, cormorants, kingfishers and eagles. While the wildlife may generally be elusive, baboons tend to make themselves known if they’re around, and the ostriches roaming the surrounding plains are a delight.
