Vietnam is a beguiling country, with dramatic scenery, a thriving streetfood culture, crumbling colonial architecture, a rich Cultural heritage and some not too shabby beaches. The country is long and narrow running North and South, distances can be long by road, but there is a good domestic air network. Most travellers tend to either concentrate on the North of the country from Hanoi down to Hoi An, or do the full North to South down to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. Vietnam's highlights include a cruise on the majestic Halong Bay, buzzing Hanoi, the Imperial City of Hue and sleepy riverside Hoi An.
We first visited Vietnam nearly 20 years ago and much has changed in the interim. Vietnam has experienced an explosion in visitor numbers over the last five years and some places aren't what they were. But if you scratch below the surface and plan your trip wisely it isn't too difficult to avoid the crowds. Vietnam is fantastic for cycling, you don't need to tackle a hard core multi day ride, but some easy rural rides through traditional villages are often the highlight of a visit. And of course, it is worth planning in some beach time, just to slow down into an easier pace of life after experiencing Vietnam's hectic mega cities. Whilst the mainland boasts some OK beaches (Mue Ne, Hoi An and Na Thrang), the best beaches are offshore on Phu Quoc Island, and in rainy season it is even worth combining Vietnam with Koh Samui in Thailand.
