Overview

Musango Safari Camp is a small, independent bush camp in a beautiful lakeside setting within the Matusadona region of northern Zimbabwe. Owner operated by a highly experienced former national park warden and Zimbabwean guide, this rustic and intimate camp sits on a tranquil private island just outside the national park. Comprising eight thatched chalets, the camp offers top notch hosting and guiding, along with a good variety of land and water based activities. The camp will appeal to travellers seeking an authentic and simple yet comfortable wilderness experience in an idyllic location.

Matusadona National Park sits on the shores of the vast and picturesque Lake Kariba. The area boasts abundant birdlife and strong seasonal wildlife particularly from June to October, when high numbers of lion, elephant, hippo, waterbuck, and crocodile, plus the rare black rhino, are drawn towards the shores of the lake. The camp is open year round, and visitors during October and November should prepare for extremely high temperatures, at a time when wildlife viewing reaches at its peak.

The main building in camp is a two storey open-sided structure with a shaded bar, lounge, and communal dining area on the ground floor, and a further comfy lounge area on the first floor with super views over the lake, particularly stunning at sunrise. Outside is a refreshing plunge pool and loungers. Musango Camp operates on generator power and so battery charging is possible, but due to its remote location, there is no Wi-Fi.

There is a strong focus on water-based activities, including boat safari, catamaran sailing excursions and canoeing. Fishing is highly popular and suitable for all levels including novice; the lake is renowned for its high numbers of tiger fish, vundu, bream, and catfish. Guided walks are available in the national park with experienced guides, and can involve tracking the black rhino, which has been reintroduced to this area. Game drives are also available, whilst cultural visits to are a great opportunity to interact with the local Tonga community and learn about their customs and way of life.

Accommodation comprises eight airy, tented chalets with high thatched ceilings. Each simple, well-appointed chalet has a double or twin beds, and an ensuite bathroom built using local stone, containing a shower, washbasin and WC. Outside each chalet is a private veranda and seating with tranquil views over the lake. Two of the chalets come with their own private plunge pool.

Children of all ages are extremely welcome in camp. Additional camp beds for families with children can be accommodated in the larger tents. The camp is fenced, however as this is a wildlife area beside a substantial lake, parents are reminded that children should be supervised at all times.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!
