EnquireChanga Safari Park is a tranquil, upmarket safari camp located on the southern shores of Zimbabwe’s picturesque Lake Kariba, one of the world’s largest manmade reservoirs. It’s part of the Matusadona National Park, which is one of the country’s more remote and unspoiled protected areas. Back in1958 hunting was outlawed and Lake Kariba was filled in soon after, meaning that many animal species now thrive in the area. In fact, it’s one of the few remaining places on the continent where the black rhino can be seen in its natural habitat.
The camp exudes comfort and can accommodate a maximum of 24 people at any given time, making it a fairly intimate retreat. There are a total of eight luxury safari tents, each with its own private deck complete with a seating area and hammock for enjoying the views. Inside each tent is a comfortable double bed, a dressing table and, in the bathroom area, a double vanity unit. The toilet and shower are separate, while outside there’s an additional open-air private bathroom with both a shower and a bathtub. All tents are individually decorated, with their design inspired by various African styles. Specialised netting is used to ensure that guests are fully protected from mosquitoes while in their tents.
Camp meals feature an appetising array of local and national dishes, with food freshly prepared using locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast and lunch are served on the main deck either in an open-air dining space covered by a thatched roof, or out in the open by a large tree. As for dinner, it’s served in a different spot every night and is presented in a candlelit setting. Afternoon tea and morning hot drinks are also available.
Aside from the spacious main deck, there’s a swimming pool and, down by the shores of Lake Kariba, a private beach area with a fire pit. For those looking to explore the wider area, there’s a broad menu of activities to choose from. These include early morning game walks led by a professional guide, tiger fishing trips out on the lake, and thrilling game drives. Relaxing cruises, including sunset cruises, and bird watching sessions are also available. A diverse collection of animals can be seen throughout the area, with many spotted from within the camp’s own grounds.
Those visiting with children are advised to book the interconnecting family tents. While it’s rare for animals to approach tents or humans, parents are reminded to keep an eye on their young ones at all times due to the camp being open to wildlife.
