Overview

Ruckomechi Camp is an upmarket safari camp in a stunning, remote setting on the edge of Mana Pools National Park, northern Zimbabwe. The camp sits in a substantial private concession shaded by mahogany, albida, and acacia trees on the banks of the majestic Zambezi River, with spectacular views of Zambia’s Rift Valley mountain range on the opposite bank. This extremely comfortable camp offers ten elegant tented suites, all with lovely river views, plus a variety of land and water based activities, and a stay here would combine well with visits to sister camps in Hwange National Park, Victoria Falls and Botswana.

Communal spaces in camp comprise a comfortable and open-plan dining, lounge and bar area, all with super views. Outside is a decked terrace with an inviting swimming pool and loungers. There is also a fire pit with seating, a great spot for a sundowner or post dinner 'digestif'. A little way from camp is an atmospheric and indulgent ‘bath with a view’, which offers a scenic, alfresco bathing experience.

Mana Pools National Park boasts impressive wildlife viewing, particularly during the June to October dry season when lion, elephant, wild dog, leopard, kudu, zebra, hippo, and buffalo are abundant. Elephants regularly visit Ruckomechi to feast on the pods of the surrounding albida trees, enabling game viewing from the comfort of your own lodgings. The camp operates seasonally from April to November, and visitors from October onwards should come prepared for extremely high temperatures, coinciding with wildlife density at its peak.

Activities include morning and afternoon game drives in the private concession, plus night drives using red filtered spotlights to avoid disturbing wildlife. Guided walks are also available. Birding enthusiasts can enjoy spotting the area’s prolific birdlife, including the western banded snake eagle, the collared palm thrush, and the African golden oriole. Water based activities include scenic river cruises and canoeing on the Zambezi. Catch and release fishing is also available, subject to additional cost. There's also the option to enjoy an unforgettable night sleeping under African skies at the camp’s star bed, which has super views over a popular waterhole.

Accommodation in camp comprises ten spacious and well-appointed tented suites. Each unit comprises double or twin beds, draped with mosquito nets, and a generous ensuite bathroom with contemporary fittings. Outside is a private terrace with seating and tranquil river views.

Children aged 6 and over are very welcome, although families travelling with children between 6 and 12 years of age are obliged to book and pay for private activities. In cases where the camp is booked for the sole use of one party, children under 6 years may be permitted to stay. Note that walking activities are only open to children of 13 years or above and youngsters need to be at least 16 to participate in canoe excursions. The minimum age for boating is 6. Two canvas family tents are available, both of which sleep up to four guests in two twin bedrooms with an ensuite bathroom. Note the camp is unfenced and wildlife does regularly roam through, and while it is unlikely that animals would approach tents or people, parents are reminded that children should be supervised at all times.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!
