Overview

Vundu is an independent safari camp in a stunning waterside location in Mana Pools National Park, northern Zimbabwe. This simple, intimate camp offers just eight tented chalets in a tranquil, shady spot on the banks of the majestic Zambezi River. A UNESCO world heritage site, Mana Pools boasts abundant seasonal wildlife including elephant, lion, leopard, wild dog, hippo, buffalo, and the occasional cheetah. Birdlife in the area is prolific. The camp is family owned and operated by a husband and wife team who are both professional guides, and owner Nick is renowned for his wild dog research. Authentic and friendly, with relaxed hosting and exceptional guiding, Vundu Camp will appeal to travellers seeking a rustic, genuine safari experience.

Guest areas in camp comprise an open air, elevated lounge, bar, and dining area where communal meals are served alongside great river views. There is a small library, and tea and coffee facilities. Outside is a fire pit with seating, ideal for an atmospheric post dinner drink. Note that due to the camp’s remote location, there is no Wi-Fi or mobile phone reception.

A range of land and water based activities includes morning and afternoon game drives, fishing, and bird watching. Guided walks are a particular forte at Vundu, offering thrilling up-close game viewing. Peaceful canoe safaris on the Zambezi are a great opportunity to observe animal activity on the water. The camp operates seasonally from April to November, and visitors during October and November should come prepared for extremely high temperatures; however this is a period when game viewing is at its most intense.

The accommodation comprises eight tented chalets under airy thatched ceilings. Each spacious chalet is simply furnished with twin or double beds draped with mosquito nets, a modest but comfortable lounge area, and a generous ensuite bathroom with basin, WC, and both indoor and outdoor showers with hot and cold water. Each unit is equipped with free-standing fans. Outside is a private terrace with seating and great views of the iconic Zambezi.

Children of 6 years and over are welcome, and children aged 6 to 12 stay for 50% of the adult rate. A two-bedroom family chalet is available, which offers a twin room and a double bedroom, both with ensuite bathrooms, plus a generous lounge area. Note that there is a minimum age restriction of 12 years for guided walks and canoe safaris, and families with children aged 6 to 12 are required to book and pay for a private safari vehicle for game drives. The camp is unfenced and wildlife, including elephants, regularly wanders through. Although it is unlikely that animals would approach chalets or people, parents are reminded that children must be supervised at all times.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!
