This trek traverses the borderline between the two wilderness areas of Ansel Adams and Yosemite National Park. Once you have loaded up the mules with all of your gear, you will set off hiking through pine forests, along trails established by early settlers taking their live stock up to the high meadows. The hike is about 6 miles, with some ascents. As you gain altitude, you will pass meadows and some magnificent views. Once you reach your remote base camp, you will set up camp and then have time to swim in the crystal clear lake. Your next day will be spent on a hike up to one of the local peaks to enjoy jaw dropping views or to a nearby lake, or you could spend the day simply relaxing around the camp and enjoying the silence of the wilderness. Your guide will talk you through all of the options and help you to choose what is best for your family. On your final day you will re-trace your steps back to the trail-head.
Day 1: Check in anytime after 4pm at the Pines Resort by Bass Lake. There are several restaurants in this tiny village, where you can have dinner on your own. At 6pm, you will meet your guides in the lobby of your accommodation and go over the trip details together.
Day 2: After breakfast on your own, you will drive to the trailhead. After loading the mules, you will then head off on your hike, which will be approximately six miles. You will stop along the way for a picnic lunch before arriving at your camping spot. After pitching your tent, there will be time to swim, play and relax before a mouth-watering dinner under the stars.
Day 3: Today will be a day hike from your camp. You will discuss the walking options with your guide and you can choose between hiking to one of the scenic Alpine lakes in the area and the option to climb one of the Yosemite boundary peaks for a view of the National Park and Yosemite Valley.
Day 5: After breakfast, you head back down to Bass Lake, where arrival is early in the afternoon. Here, you can reward yourselves with a swim in the lake or a dip in the hot tub.
It is a 5 hour drive from Los Angeles, or a 4 hour drive from San Francisco.
Meals, camping gear (if requested), shared accommodation, permits and guides.
Before embarking on a trip like this, you should be confident that you are fit and motivated to complete the hike to base camp, as well as enjoying the day trips that will have some elevation gain.
The camping whilst beautiful, is incredibly basic. There are no toilet facilities or showers. Sleeping mats and bags are provided.

I would like to say a massive thank you for organising our Vietnam trip. The itinerary and execution were superb, as was the attention to detail. I would also like to thank the agent who was on the end of my whats app chat (I have no idea who they were!) – always available, always quick to respond, and kept me updated regarding times etc. Also, the guides Dan (north) and Tien (mid) were just excellent, and we really enjoyed their company. The lady (whose name I have forgotten) who was our additional guide for the DMZ day was exceedingly good and made that day very special.
