We've explored South East Asia extensively over the years and this itinerary represents our absolute favourite highlights of the region.
DAY 1: OVERNIGHT FLIGHT TO LAOS
Overnight flight to Luang Prabang usually via Bangkok
DAY 2: ARRIVE LUANG PRABANG
After a long flight, our guide and driver will be there to meet you off the plane and whisk you to your hotel for a relaxing afternoon at leisure. Luang Prabang is one of SE Asia's finest Cities, a gorgeous atmospheric UNESCO protected hib of gilded temples, Buddhist monks and faded colonial era villas.
Accommodation: Satri House
DAY 3: LUANG PRABANG BY BIKE
Today your private guide will take you on a half day cycle tour of Luang Prabang's highlights, including the Royal Palace, Wat Mai, Wat Xieng Thong and the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre. We recommend a nice relaxing afternoon by the pool (or grab a massage at one of the many excellent and inexpensive spots in town). In the evening we recommend climbing the 328 stairs to the summit of Mt. Phousi for a panoramic sunset before exploring the nearby evening hill tribe market.
Accommodation: Satri House
DAY 4: MEKONG, CAVES AND WATERFALLS
For early risers, there is a very special dawn visit to watch the monks collecting the alms. As the sun begins to rise, long lines of orange-robed monks leave their pagodas and walk barefoot down the streets collecting offerings from Luang Prabang residents. It is a beautiful, serene ceremony that highlights the spiritualism of the Laos people. Return to the hotel for breakfast.
Luang Prabang lies at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers and this morning you'll cruise the Mekong, past local villages and fishermen to the famous Pak Ou Caves filled with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues. Returning to Luang Prabang for lunch in one of our favourite restaurants in Luang Prabang. This afternoon, it is around an hours drive through the Luang Prabang countryside to Kuang Si Waterfalls, past rice fields, hills and small villages. the Kuang Si falls cascade over several levels with beautiful pools at the base of the falls that are perfect for swimming (bring your costume!). For the adventurous, it is possible to walk to the top of the falls with fantastic views.
Accommodation: Satri House
DAY 5: LUANG PRABANG TO SIEM REAM
After a short flight, enjoy a leisurely day by the pool before heading to Angkor Wat for a first glimpse at sunset when the temples are at their quietest. You'll travel to the temples on a local ‘remork’ (similar to the Thai tuk tuk) and then enjoy a short hot air balloon trip (the helium balloon is tethered but takes you 120m up in the air) to get an idea of the sheer size of the temple area and enjoy the spectacular view of Angkor from above.
Accommodation: Sala Lodges
DAY 6: CAMBODIAN COUNTRYSIDE
Today, depart on a scenic cycling tour through the most beautiful Cambodian countryside. You will pass rice fields and villages. The road is flat and easy to cycle, and the tour is fully supported, so if you or your children don’t want to continue by bicycle, you can continue by private vehicle. At Kompong Phluck you will embark on boat trip on the Tonlé Sap Lake, where you will have the opportunity to learn about life on the lake. The Tonlé Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and officially designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, covering an area of around 250,000 hectares in the dry season. You'll visit Kompong Phluck, a village where you will see houses on stilts that are submerged when Tonlé Sap Lake extends. On the way, you will pass floating houses and flooded forests and enjoy a picnic lunch served in a floating house.
The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the pool, for the evening we recommend heading out into town, where the carnival atmosphere will be in full swing in and around pub street. Look out for the Cambodian BBQ restaurants (bbq crocodile anyone?), street vendors selling grilled scorpions and assorted creepy crawlies and a couple of superb ice cream cafes (The Gelato lab is our favourite!)
Accommodation: Sala Lodges
DAY 7: ANGKOR WAT TEMPLES. OPTIONAL TREASURE HUNT
After breakfast, visit the ancient city of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII. This city is surrounded by an 8 m high wall drawing a perfect square. Enter the city through the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with Elephants and four giant faces. From here, continue to Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city. This 12th century masterpiece is a study in grandeur and is well-known for its 54 towers with enigmatic faces representing the 54 provinces of the Great Khmer Empire. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must-visits as they are both known for their intricate bas-reliefs. Finally explore Ta Prohm temple, (the ‘Lara Croft’ movie was set and filmed here). Ta Prohm is unique in that it has been left largely as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground.
If you have younger children we do recommend a treasure hunt amidst the temples. We can organise this on request, please ask for more details.
Enjoy the afternoon free at leisure

This is a tailor-made itinerary, the guide price quoted here is based on all accommodation (BB basis), transfers and private guided tours where stated. International flights are not included due to seasonal variations, but we will quote for these when we prepare a proposal for you.
This itinerary is possible year round. The rainy season (May to October) which affects all three countries is not all that bad in Luang Prabang or Siem Reap and whilst Thailand's West Coast is heavily affected, there are alternative beach locations we would suggest for this time (Koh Samui).
May to October: May to October is rainy season in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, but it is not often as bad as it sounds. Rain is fairly inconsistent and varies from year to year, but tends to be worst later in the season in September and October. In July and August, there will be clouds and chances of rain most days, but often only for an hour in the afternoon or evening. The rainfall is more of an impediment to beach stay, so if you are planning on travelling in July / August, we would suggest Koh Samui on the East Coast of Thailand rather than Koh Lanta on the West Coast as it tends to be a lot drier and the sea is a lot more settled there.
November to February: November to February is the cool season, with slightly cooler more comfortable temperatures (albeit still reaching upto 30 Celsius in the height of the day). This is the most popular time of the year to visit the region.
March to May: March to May is the hot season. Temperatures frequently hover around the 35 Celsius mark and it can be uncomfortably hot in Angkor Wat at this time of year.
This is a tailor-made itinerary designed for families. This means we have adjusted the pacing of the itinerary, designed experiences and chosen accommodation that we feel fits the needs of a family well. We have visited these locations with our own families and needless to say, love them!
Accommodation is of a high character 4* equivalent standard and represent what we feel to be best in class for families. If budget is tight there are some super (if less special) options at lower cost.

I would like to say a massive thank you for organising our Vietnam trip. The itinerary and execution were superb, as was the attention to detail. I would also like to thank the agent who was on the end of my whats app chat (I have no idea who they were!) – always available, always quick to respond, and kept me updated regarding times etc. Also, the guides Dan (north) and Tien (mid) were just excellent, and we really enjoyed their company. The lady (whose name I have forgotten) who was our additional guide for the DMZ day was exceedingly good and made that day very special.
