DAY 1: ARRIVAL FOLLOWED BY AFTERNOON WALK THROUGH THE NAMIBRAND NATURE RESERVE TO OVERNIGHT CAMP
The Tok Tokkie Trails base, Die Duine Homestead, is located 2 hours south of Sesriem, or 6 hours’ drive from Windhoek or Swakopmund. On arrival, Tok Tokkie’s friendly team provide refreshments, water refills, and a small daypack for personal items required for the afternoon’s walk. Guest luggage is transferred to the overnight camp by vehicle. There’s a short, scenic drive to the trail’s starting point, followed by a 1-2 hour walk across the rolling, vegetation-covered sand dunes. While not as enormous as Sossusvlei’s towering dunes, those of the NamibRand possess a unique beauty of their own, and are a delight to explore. On arrival at camp, guests relax with a sundowner and enjoy a hearty three-course dinner. Note that there are no charging facilities en route, so be sure to arrive with all batteries on full charge! NamibRand is one of the few ‘International Dark Sky Reserves’ in the world, and falling asleep directly under the star-studded expanse is one of the tour’s defining highlights.
ACCOMMODATION: sleep out on comfortable stretcher mattresses with duvet and pillow (luggage transported by service team). In rare incidences of bad weather, tents may be provided. Fresh water is available at overnight camps from a borehole.
WALK DURATION: 1 – 2 hours
DAY 2: A FULL DAY’S HIKE THROUGH THE NAMIBRAND NATURE RESERVE
Tea and coffee is served before sunrise, followed by a light breakfast. Today’s full-day hike commences during the cool temperatures of the early morning, with breath-taking views of the plains and dunes. Described light-heartedly as the ‘early morning news’, the expert guide will explain any visible animal tracks, and with a combination of luck and expertise visitors might glimpse the golden mole, the barking gecko, or the flightless wasp. The walk passes over a mountain saddle before descending gently to a dry riverbed. Throughout the day, Tok Tokkie’s expert guide will explain how the fascinating desert flora and fauna adapt to the harsh environment. The birdlife is surprisingly good, and larger animals such as bat-eared fox, oryx, springbok, and ostrich might also be encountered. After around 4 - 4 ½ hours of walking, chefs provide lunch in a shady spot, and water bottles are refilled. After a good rest during which the midday heat recedes, the afternoon’s 2 - 2 ½ walk commences up and over the sea of dunes, with a backdrop of magnificent mountain scenery. There are some superb photography opportunities, particularly just before sunset when the dune shadows create a magical, colourful spectacle. After a long and satisfying day’s walk, guests arrive at camp, enjoy drinks and dinner, and fall asleep to the occasional sound of an owl or barking gecko amidst the silence of the desert.

DAY 3: GENTLE MORNING’S WALK, FOLLOWED BY DEPARTURE
Guests are woken with tea, coffee, and breakfast shortly before sunrise. The morning’s walk is an easy one, lasting around 3 – 3 ½ hours, and continuing through rolling dunes interspersed with camel thorn trees which provide welcome shade during rests. Guests arrive at the Tok Tokkie Farmhouse at around 11.30am, and when time allows, a visit to the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), an organisation which promotes the need for environmentally responsible citizens, may be arranged, followed by departure. Note that the route outlined above may be reversed at the discretion of Tok Tokkie Trails.

Tok Tokkie Trails run from mid of February till early December
In Namibia, the months from June to September are winter in Southern Africa but temperatures during the day reach very comfortable early 20 degrees Celsius, just pretty chilly at night but you can keep comfortable with various layers. This is the time of the least / no rainfall making the vegetation less dense and the game easy to spot.
Autumn, April-May tends to be a lovely time with all the young being born and the vegetation still green. Spring, late September into early November can have variable weather depending on the previous rainfall but offers excellent game viewing
The summer months November to March tend to be the highest rainfall. It tends to be hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Tok Tokkie Trails are not run during December, January and February.
The Tok Tokkie trail is a fantastic adventure for those who enjoy walking and sleeping under the stars. Walking is relatively easy, you only carry your daypack, but a good level of basic fitness is required. Group sizes can be between 2 - 8 guest and the the pace is set to suit the group, with lots of time to marvel and enjoy.
The camping set-up is very comfortable with stretcher mattresses, duvets, delicious meals and sundowners
