In our experience, having a private guide and vehicle is a huge advantage for families allowing you to travel at your own pace. On this safari, which has been designed specifically for families, you will have your own private safari guide and safari 4WD and stay in good value camps which don’t compromise on location or comfort. By necessity, visiting the Serengeti will always involve some driving time, but we have tried to keep travel to a minimum here where possible. Those who are less keen on this aspect should consider a fly in safari to the Selous in Southern Tanzania instead.
The safari starts in Lake Manyara, a small park centred on a shallow alkaline lake with superb birdlife (including pelican and flamingo) and good populations of lion, elephant, buffalo and giraffe. Our Camp is situated in an isolated location set at the base of a waterfall on the banks of the Endabash River. Although dry for most of the year, the waterfall forms the only lake for miles, providing superb wildlife viewing (including buffalo, elephant and lion). We use this as a base for game drives in Lake Manyara itself and in Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater is an incredible natural amphitheatre which supports 25,000 large mammals and a large population of predators (including lion). Whilst at the Manyara Camp, we balance the game drives with some gentle mountain biking through forest and lake shore areas around the farming village of Mto Wa Mbu.
The second half of your safari is in the renowned Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti covers a vast area continuous with the Masai Mara in Kenya and is famous for its spectacular annual migration of huge numbers of Wildebeest, Zebra and Thomson’s Gazelle. During your stay here you will go on a series of game drives with your guide, enjoy a guided walk with qualified walking guide and armed National Park ranger and have plenty of time to relax around your safari camp in between.
To save on the long journey back, we fly from a small local airstrip in the Serengeti back to Arusha for your International flight home. Alternatively, this safari combines nicely with some time relaxing on the beach on Zanzibar. Please get in touch and we will be happy to quote this safari including 3-7 days on Zanzibar. As a guide, a 5 night extension to Zanzibar with internal flights and 5 nights full board at Matemwe Beach Lodge would cost approximately £600pp (based on a family of 2 adults and 2 children under the age of 12 years).

This holiday fits in perfectly with summer holidays and half term holidays in February and October.
It is best to avoid the long rains that run April and May. During this period it tends to rain through the night and into the morning. It is usually possible to get a dry spell between 10am and 2pm for getting out on safari.
The short rains bring some rain during November, but this is less of an impediment and they have usually cleared up by October half term.
December, January, July and August are peak season, expect flight costs to be substantially higher.
This is a private departure and children of all ages will be accepted. However we do recommend this for children over the age of 8 years, as it involves long travel distances on particular days when moving between areas, seeing wildlife and passing through rural African towns. Most importantly children are your responsibility for the duration as you are in unfenced wild environments. A trip of this nature will be an experience of a life time given the diverse scenery and exceptional wildlife. Guide will do their utmost to engage with children and smaller bikes are available in Lake Manyara.
