Your Tanzania adventure begins with a visit to Lake Manyara, a shallow alkaline lake which is surrounded by grassy floodplains, acacia woodlands and evergreen forests. Although a small park, it contains a great diversity of wildlife with good populations of lion, elephant, buffalo and giraffe alongside the pelicans, flamingos and numerous other species of birds that are drawn to the lake for feeding.
Basing yourselves on a working coffee plantation, you will then visit Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most spectacular safari destinations in Africa. Closed off from the plains, it is the largest unbroken caldera in the world, capable of supporting 25,000 large mammals with a large population of predators, in particular lion and spotted hyena. The only downside to the superb game populations are the corresponding safari vehicle populations to match. That said, a visit is still thoroughly recommended en-route to the Serengeti and there are some superb lodge options in the area, especially for families.
From the Crater, you carry on to the vast Serengeti, the world’s last great wildlife refuge. Stretching from the Ngorongoro Highlands in the east, Lake Victoria in the west and continuing into Kenya to the north, the Serengeti's 14,763 km2 contain about three million large animals. The Serengeti is famous for its spectacular annual migration of huge numbers of Wildebeest, Zebra and Thomson’s Gazelle. During your stay here, you will go on a series of game drives with your guide, with time to relax around your safari camp in between
Throughout your safari, you will have a private safari adapted 4WD and Tanzanian safari guide. This is particularly advantageous for families as it means you can go at your own pace and focus in on your own interests.
After your safari, a light aircraft flight takes you across to the tropical island of Zanzibar for a five night stay on the beach to relax and enjoy the sun and sea. Zanzibar is the perfect beach destination, with pristine beaches, excellent snorkelling and diving, a lovely collection of small characterful beach lodges and the fascinating Stone Town to explore with its twisting turning cobbled streets, oriental bazaars and ornate architecture. For this itinerary we have recommended the small and friendly Unguja Lodge which offers beach swimming and snorkelling from the property, a nice pool and relaxed vibe. There are good alternatives to be had for those looking for somewhere at a different price point or different feel. Please get in touch and we would be glad to discuss your requirements.

This holiday fits in perfectly with the slightly longer summer holidays.
It is best to avoid the long rains that run April and May. During this period it tends to rain through the night and into the morning. It is usually possible to get a dry spell between 10am and 2pm for getting out on safari.
The short rains bring some rain during November, but this is less of an impediment and they have usually cleared up by October half term.
December, January, July and August are peak season, expect flight costs to be substantially higher.
This safari has been designed with families in mind. Accommodation is in good standard camps and lodges and the safari has been designed with a nice balance of game drives, minimised journey / move times where possible and a mix of activities.
