Overview

Chinzombo is an ultra-luxurious, modern bush camp set within 60 acres of private land on the game-rich banks of eastern Zambia’s Luangwa River, just outside the South Luangwa National Park boundary. This recently refurbished camp sits on an original Norman Carr camp site, and is run by Norman Carr Safaris, renowned for their world-class guiding and hosting. Suiting guests seeking opulence and tranquillity, this high-end camp offers spectacular wildlife viewing, excellent cuisine, a lovely riverside swimming pool, spa treatments, and total comfort. Open year-round, it is conveniently located a short 45-minute drive from Mfuwe airport.

Set amidst a grove of ancient msikzi trees, the main lounge and dining area sits on white-washed decking overlooking the expansive, game-rich plains and riverbank. The camp’s impressive bespoke architecture boasts ultra-modern open plan spaces, whilst the décor retains a natural and comfortable feel, with leather trunks, copper gas lamps, and black and white photographs alluding to its rich safari history. Sumptuous seating areas, a well-stocked bar, and a covered dining area also feature; though meals are more often than not served beneath the stars. There’s a fire pit surrounded by cushioned benches where breakfast is cooked in the mornings, and where guests gather after dinner to swap stories of the day’s adventures.

The accommodation consists of just six incredibly spacious canvas villas with contemporary facilities. Each villa comes equipped with king-sized double or twin beds, along with air conditioning which is particularly welcome during the intense October to November heat. All villas have large ensuite bathrooms containing a shower, free-standing bathtub, and twin basins, and boast large outdoor decks with private plunge pools overlooking the Luangwa River. A mini-bar, tea and coffee station, numerous comfortable chairs, a writing desk, and Wi-Fi connection completes each room.

Safari activities at Chinzombo are privately and expertly guided, ensuring maximum flexibility for each party. The main focus is on day and night game drives, although some walking safaris are also included. These safari excursions make the most of the private, direct access to the Mfuwe area, one of the most game-rich zones of the South Luangwa National Park. Although the game viewing is exhilarating, and often packed with predator action, note that sightings will usually be shared with a number of other vehicles. A visit during the January to May 'emerald' season brings less crowding and slightly lower prices. Although access to some areas may be restricted due to the rains, visitors during this time can expect incredible bird spotting, and abundant sightings of baby animals.

Children of all ages are welcome at Chinzombo, although private activities will usually need to be booked at additional cost. There is one family unit containing two bedrooms, and an engaging children's programme featuring a village visit, an 'art safari', and short walks in the area surrounding the camp. Parents should note that children under the age of 12 are not permitted on walking safaris in the National Park, and that all children must remain under constant adult supervision.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!
