EnquireSausage Tree is a high-end safari camp found nestled on the tranquil banks of the Zambezi River in the Lower Zambezi National Park, southern Zambia. Known for its excellent guiding, friendly atmosphere, and competent hosting, the accommodation comprises characterful bedouin-style tents in a beautiful, game-rich setting. One of the most luxurious safari camps on the Lower Zambezi, the property houses an unusually large swimming pool, and hosts a good variety of water and land based activities. Named after the distinctive African sausage tree or Kigelia, the camp is just one hour’s drive from Lusaka airport, and operates on a seasonal basis, open throughout the peak game viewing months of April to November. The surrounding National Park boasts superb wildlife viewing, including lion, leopard, elephant, zebra, hippo, crocodile, buffalo, hyena, kudu and wild dog, and is home to approximately 500 species of birds.
The main building is an open-sided, stylish tented structure comprising a communal dining area, comfortable lounge, library, and bar. Outside is an expansive decked terrace and a wonderful 25m swimming pool with loungers and panoramic views of the Zambezi. A tranquil fire pit area near the water’s edge is perfect for sundowners and post-dinner stargazing.
Mealtimes in camp are flexible, featuring a variety of exciting locations. Extensive, buffet style breakfasts and lunches are frequently served in the bush, or out on a sandbank in the Zambezi, with water lapping at guests’ feet. Evening meals are relaxed and sociable; communal seating, friendly hosting and several delicious courses are de rigeur, served on the terrace by candlelight or around a campfire deep in the bush. Private dining and special diets can be accommodated.
A variety of land and water based activities is offered, including day and night game drives and walking safaris with extremely knowledgeable guides. Canoe excursions and scenic day and evening boat cruises allow guests the thrill of up-close encounters with the Zambezi’s pods of hippos and resident crocodiles. Fishing excursions are available, and this is a birdwatcher’s paradise, so binoculars are a must!
The camp’s accommodation comprises seven luxurious Bedouin-style tents, plus a two bedroom family unit. Spaced out along the riverbank for privacy, the tents are stylishly decorated with beautiful teak furniture and generous four poster beds draped with mosquito nets. Five of the tents have open air bathrooms and sliding doors opening onto a private veranda with splendid river views. Two larger tents have both indoor and outdoor bathrooms plus a dining area, and an outside veranda with private plunge pool. All units come with their own personal butler, or ‘muchinda’.
Families with children over eight years of age are most welcome at camp, and babysitting can be arranged. A family tented unit is available, with two ensuite double/twin bedrooms, and a spacious open-plan lounge and dining area. Outside is a private veranda and a plunge pool. Note that there is a minimum age restriction of 12 years for walking and canoeing activities. As the camp and swimming pool are unfenced, and wild animals do roam through camp on occasion, families are reminded that children must be supervised at all times.
Sausage Tree Camp offers upmarket, spacious accommodation, and excellent service, in an idyllic riverside setting teeming with Zambezi wildlife.

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.
Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!
All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.
