Overview

Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma is an upmarket, boutique lodge in a beautiful waterside setting in southern Zambia, only 12km from the legendary Victoria Falls and the historic town of Livingstone. Named after Dr Livingstone’s loyal friends, the stylish property enjoys a secluded location on the banks of the Zambezi River, in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, and boasts unique tree-house accommodation coupled with easy access to a superb range of activities including gentle water-based excursions, cultural visits, and thrilling adrenaline sports. The area boasts diverse bird and wildlife, including hippo, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, crocodile, baboon, and wild dog.

The distinctive main building features a raised thatched ceiling and contemporary decor. Guest areas include a split-level lounge, bar and wine cellar, open air dining area, and souvenir shop. Outside is a stylish decked terrace and an inviting swimming pool with superb views. The lodge has a riverside spa, where guests can enjoy organic beauty treatments. Cuisine is excellent, with a varied, three course menu, and private dining can be arranged.

Activities include game drives, walking safaris with extremely knowledgeable guides, Zambezi canoeing excursions, and visits to the renowned Victoria Falls. Sundowner river cruises, catch and release fishing, and visits to the local Nakatindi community are also available. Subject to additional cost, adrenalin seekers can partake in white water rafting, and enjoy a breath-taking helicopter flight over Victoria Falls. Excursions across the border to the Zimbabwe side of the Falls are possible, and to the World Heritage Site of Livingstone Island.

The lodge’s accommodation comprises 12 unique tree houses, built into the canopy of towering ebony trees and connected by wooden aerial walkways. Each air conditioned unit has a bedroom and ensuite bathroom with freestanding bathtub and separate shower, plus mini-bar, mosquito net and fan. Outside is a private veranda with spectacular views of the tumbling Zambezi River.

Two private ‘Chuma’ houses are additionally available. Each ensuite unit has two bedrooms plus a spacious dining area and lounge. Outside is a private deck with a plunge pool. Dedicated staff and a private chef are included.

Children of all ages are welcome, with discounts for under 12s. The two Chuma houses are ideal for families with little ones, whilst the tree houses are suitable for children age nine and over, sharing with an adult. Child menus, earlier evening mealtimes and babysitting are available. Activities for young guests include game drives, campfire story time, arts and crafts, and local school visits. Note that participation in game drives for children under five years of age is at the discretion of the lodge manager, and subject to families booking a private vehicle, at extra cost. Under 12s may participate in game drives, at the manager’s discretion. There is a minimum age restriction of 12 years for walking safaris and 15 years for canoeing and white water rafting.

Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma offers an upmarket stay in a superb riverside setting, with convenient access to a fantastic range of activities and the world renowned Victoria Falls.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!
