Overview

Damaraland camp is a high quality lodge situated in the Torra conservancy, in the damaraland area in the western region of Namibia. A slick operation owned and largely run by the local community, this is a great base from which to explore the conservancy.

Guest areas at camp include a large thatched living area with comfy sofas, fireplace and bar as well as a modest swimming pool. An open camp fire and outdoor boma are great places to enjoy the scenery on pleasant evenings.

This arid scrub land supports relatively small numbers of wildlife, however this does not mean the area cannot offer a quality safari experience. A wide variety of animals can be spotted on game drives here including desert adapted elephant, ostrich, zebra, springbok and more recently, lions.

The natural rainfall cycle dictates the movement of wildlife along the river and hence varied game drives are led twice daily. Guided walking safaris take you along the river banks where you can learn about the local flora and fauna and the geological past of the area. Rock art is unique to the area and can be seen in a variety of locations.Guests can also visit local communities and farms to learn more about the daily lives of those who live there.

Accommodation is split into ten thatched, elevated suites situated on either side of the main building. Made from natural materials and colours these tented rooms blend into the hillside and all feature wooden verandahs with views across the striking landscape. All the suites are ensuite with running water and hot showers and a family suite is also available.

The minimum age for children visiting camp is twelve years, although this is lowered to six years if a private vehicle is booked. Younger children can only be accommodated if the whole camp is booked which could be an option for large groups of families. There are no specific programmes for children but the staff will do their best to tailor visits to the family and there is plenty to do. The family unit would ideally suit a family of four.

One of the first lodges in the area to be built and to make strong partnerships with local communities, Damaraland camp is a great example of a lodge having a positive impact on the local surroundings. The local staff bring bags of charm and knowledge to camp and we would tend to recommend this as one of our favourites in the area.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!
