Overview

Camp Kipwe is located in the Damaraland area in the western region of Namibia. This charming camp is nestled in a collection of boulders with sweeping views across the valley and offers a slightly different safari experience for a reasonable price.

Built between huge boulders resting on the hillside, this camp blends into the natural landscape and offers a simple lodge setting. A pleasant open air lounge area and a modest swimming pool make up the communal areas and are great places to relax after a day out on safari.

The wildlife in the area is good year round and unusually, offers the chance of spotting the elusive desert elephants as well as baboon, giraffe, jackals and the occasional leopard. Vehicle safari is the main activity at Kipwe, and the camp runs to a strict schedule of twice daily game drives around the local area. Walking safaris are also offered with this being a fantastic landscape for some unusual hikes. the guides have valuable local knowledge of the area and should be able to take you to some breathtaking viewpoints. Rock art is also a major draw of the area and there are some impressive works to be seen at various locations. Cultural interaction is a big part of the camp’s ethos and there are some really interesting local villages guests can visit. Hot air balloon rides are also offered at nearby Twyfelfontein.

The accommodation is split into ten eco friendly bungalows that are a pleasant change from the usual safari tents. Each room features a private verandah and can be made up as a twin or double bed. The large, open rooms use natural colours and materials to blend into the rocky landscape and all have ensuite bathrooms with outdoor showers and washing facilities. Air conditioning is also in each bungalow to counteract the much hotter months between August and November. Two family suites are available with separate children’s tents; perfect for families with older children who would enjoy their own space. One mini suite is also available:- a thatched bungalow with a bedroom and lounge area, verandah, television, mini bar and personal laundry service.

Unusually, there is no minimum age for children at Camp Kipwe, which is a great advantage for those with young children. However, close parental supervision will be needed as the camp is not specifically geared up for children and with so many boulders, the landscape is not particularly child friendly. In addition, the family suites have separate tents for the children which may not be appropriate for those not old enough to be left to sleep alone.

Camp Kipwe is a pleasant camp in a fantastic location for impressive hiking and good game viewing. Whilst the wildlife here may be slightly more sparse than in other areas, the guides do a good job of getting the most out of the area and provide an enjoyable desert experience.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.
