Overview

An authentic, secluded tropical beach getaway in the protected Menai Bay area, Fumba Beach Lodge provides an ideal spot for total relaxation on the spice island of Zanzibar.

There are 26 en-suite cottages either overlooking the ocean or hotel beach gardens, including luxury suites that each have a private deck and hammock. The Baobab suites are a highlight: usually reserved for honeymooners, these two suites are set against a 900-year-old Baobab tree with direct access to the beach, and fantastic views of the sand and sea.

The architecture of the resort reflects its eco-friendly nature. The main lodge, like the cottage accommodation, features bare wooden beams, traditional roof thatching, and non-air conditioned shaded comfort. The cuisine is simple and fresh. It is prepared with seafood caught by local fishermen and herbs and vegetables from the lodge’s own garden. Tropical fruit from the nearby village areas are also available. The bar and decking area is set into a Baobab tree, and the highly-recommended Jacuzzi and spa are hidden away in a tree-top setting. There is an infinity pool offering spectacular views of sunsets.

While the beach may not be the picturesque white sand found on the east coast of Zanzibar, the two-kilometre private stretch and sandy coves are perfect for enjoyable and leisurely long walks. Guests are also welcome to take the resident Rhodesian ridgeback for a walk through the neighbouring village, or sail on a dhow to one of the many uninhabited islets with a BBQ lunch.

The lodge organises various cultural excursions, such as to the historic Stone Town, to spice plantations, or to the Mangapwani Slave Caves. PADI-certified dive trainers are available for dive courses or experienced divers, and snorkelling excursions also offer the opportunity to see humpback and bottlenose dolphins and abundant coral reefs.

Fumba Beach Lodge is popular among families with children. Some deluxe rooms can adjoin each other to form a family unit. All ages are welcome, and whilst there are no specific children activities, the children enjoy playing around the lodge or on the beach and have plenty to keep themselves busy with, from the pool to the sea.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • Trip was great and all the arrangements were excellent so thank you for all the help!

Drivers and transfers were all good - on time and very good service on each trip.

Accommodation was lovely - Douar Samra was amazing (weather could have been better but lovely regardless). Riad in Marrakesh was also great!

All in all a great trip and we loved the variety of the mountains, Marrakesh and the coast.

    Thanks you once again!
