EnquireIvory Lodge is a smart safari camp in the Sikumbi Forest Reserve, a 6000-acre private conservancy that borders Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest natural reserve. It’s part of the Amalinda Safari Collection of luxury, intimate safari camps and lodges, with two sister resorts located elsewhere within the reserve. As its perimeter is entirely fenced to keep larger wild animals away, it’s noted for being one of the more family friendly camps in the Hwange area.
The camp is located right beside a floodplain and watering hole. During peak times of the year, hundreds of elephants have been known to the frequent the area. All of the camp’s nine rooms are tree houses and though heights differ slightly, they all offer excellent raised views of the often-busy watering hole. All tree-houses are spacious, comfortable and tastefully decorated, and some of them have unique features. One tree house, for example, offers views of the watering hole from the bathtub and another is a bit more secluded and therefore popular with birdwatchers. Inside each tree house is a ceiling fan and seating area, with the en-suite bathroom offering a flush toilet, shower and wash basin. All beds are covered with mosquito nets. Two of the nine tree houses are larger suites aimed at those seeking a more upmarket experience.
The thatched main building is where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, with both indoor and outdoor seating available. There’s a communal lounge area where guests are invited to relax and socialise, as well as a small swimming pool and a sunken fire pit. There’s also an on-site hide from which guests can quietly observe the animals at the watering hole. While buffalo, lions and other animals can be spotted here, this spot is particularly well known for attracting the Presidential Elephant Herd. The elephants in this herd were named after President Robert Mugabe, who decreed that they should forever remain free from poaching and culling attempts.
Thrilling game drives take place in both the Hwange National Park and the Sikumbi Forest Reserve, departing in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. For a more leisurely but still rewarding experience, safari walks enable visitors to approach packs and herds of animals on foot. Both drives and walks are led by professional guides. It’s also possible to visit a nearby village, which includes stops at the local clinic and school.
Ivory Lodge welcomes children and offers a babysitting service. While all tree houses are set up at a height, some of them are more suitable than others for families travelling with young children. Parents are reminded that while the camp is fenced and it’s unusual for animals to approach humans, children should remain under adult supervision at all times.
