Overview

Hotel Grano de Oro is a historic, colonial style property situated in the bustling capital city of San Jose, in the Central Valley area of Costa Rica. This traditional Victorian hotel sits on a tree lined street just off the city’s main avenue, only 20 minutes from San Jose’s international airport. The hotel offers 35 individually decorated bedrooms and suites, an upmarket restaurant, a bar, and a leafy rooftop garden with two alfresco hot tubs. Its proximity to the airport and central location close to the city’s museums, historic sites, eateries and shopping areas, makes Grano de Oro a good higher end choice for an overnight stay at the start or end of a Costa Rica visit.

The hotel’s spacious entrance leads to an elegant fine dining restaurant with a choice of indoor or open-air courtyard seating and a menu combining Costa Rican and European cuisine. There is a well-stocked bar and a gift shop selling Costa Rican handicrafts and souvenirs. There’s also a tranquil rooftop garden complete with loungers and two outdoor Jacuzzis which provide welcome respite from the city’s traffic and busy thoroughfares. For more informal dining options there are several decent restaurants located nearby. In-room massages and airport transfers can be arranged upon request.

San Jose’s main visitor attractions are either a short walk or taxi ride away. The Costa Rican Art Museum and La Sabana Park are a few minutes from the hotel, as is the city’s main shopping district. Popular with visitors and locals alike is the bustling Central Market, a labyrinthine maze of stalls selling everything from spices and fresh fish to handicrafts and souvenirs.

The accommodation comprises 35 bespoke rooms and suites featuring rich colour schemes and textiles, wood panelled walls and flooring, and colonial style handcrafted furniture. Varying in size, each room has a double or twin beds, and a traditional bathroom with a bathtub and shower. Several units open out onto a pleasant private courtyard area with seating. All rooms have air conditioning and fans, hot drink facilities, minibar, telephone, and satellite TV.

Children are welcome at the hotel and infants under two years stay free of charge. A number of spacious two-bedroom suites are available which are ideal for families or groups. Accommodating up to five guests, each suite comprises a double and a triple bedroom, along with a shared bathroom.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • I would like to say a massive thank you for organising our Vietnam trip. The itinerary and execution were superb, as was the attention to detail. I would also like to thank the agent who was on the end of my whats app chat (I have no idea who they were!) – always available, always quick to respond, and kept me updated regarding times etc. Also, the guides Dan (north) and Tien (mid) were just excellent, and we really enjoyed their company. The lady (whose name I have forgotten) who was our additional guide for the DMZ day was exceedingly good and made that day very special.
