Overview

This small and intimate colonial expedition style camp offers a perfect blend of safari ambience, superb wildlife opportunities and unusually good value.

Quatermain’s Camp is a modelled on a 1920’s style expedition camp, which means paired down furnishings, crisp white canvas and a simple firelight and candle ambience. There are just three guest tents spread out in the bush, each kitted out with proper loos, comfortable double beds and private deck. Guests gather for meals in a boma style living area set around a large open fire-place. There is no electricity at night - all lighting is provided by paraffin lamps.

It is always an advantage of small camps when the owners are also the hosts, and this is certainly the case at Quatermain’s. Riaan and Julie Brand host at camp, are very experienced safari guides and have an exclusive arrangement to access both Shamwari and Amakhala reserves on game drives, which is a huge plus. Also unlike most other safari options in the area, it is possible to enjoy guided bush walks, which is a fantastic way to get a feel for the environment and of course stretch your legs a little.

For families: Quatermain's is ostensibly over 12s only, but if you are a family of 4 or more, you can take the camp in entirety (there are only three tents after all) in which case children of any age are welcome. Even taking the whole camp, this actually still offers very good value compared to anywhere in Shamwari and most camps in Amakhala and is in many ways an ideal arrangement for a family. Having said that, the family will need to split two people per tent and the tents are set separately in the bush.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
