Overview

Previously owned by Laos’ four-time Prime Minister Prince Souvanna Phouma, Maison Souvannaphoum is a smart property in central Luang Prabang. The property boasts elegant French Laotian architecture, 24 lovely rooms and a luxurious spa, pool, and poolside restaurant serving Laotian and Indo-Chinese food.

There are four deluxe rooms in the original building named ‘La Residence’. Once Prince Souvanna’s rooms, they are beautifully furnished and feature partial pool views, a king-size bed, and a TV. Champagne breakfasts and afternoon teas can be delivered to ‘La Residence’ rooms on request. In addition, there are 20 rooms in the Garden Wing, all with king-size beds, balconies with views of the pool and garden, a TV, mini-bar, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Some rooms have interconnecting doors.

There’s plenty to enjoy at the hotel. The poolside restaurant, the Elephant Blanc, offers a 10-course tasting menu of the best of local Laotian cuisine, and Indo-Chinese food is also on offer. Meals are served al fresco on the pool terrace, or in the elegant restaurant. The award-winning on-site spa features a wide range of massage treatments.

Laos is still relatively untouched compared to the rest of South East Asia, and there’s a great deal to explore. The country only opened its doors to tourists in the late 1980’s and so Luang Prabang maintains its inherent natural charm, with no sense of being a ‘tourist trap’. Monks can be heard chanting their daily prayers just outside Maison Souvannaphoum and early risers can take part in the sacred Alms Giving ceremony in the mornings. Other local attractions include swimming in waterfalls, cruising down the Mekong River, and visiting one of the 33 temples in the area.

Children are welcome at Maison Souvannaphoum, and there are interconnecting rooms in the Garden Wing which are ideal for families. Parents should note that the pool is unfenced so children should be supervised at all times.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • I would like to say a massive thank you for organising our Vietnam trip. The itinerary and execution were superb, as was the attention to detail. I would also like to thank the agent who was on the end of my whats app chat (I have no idea who they were!) – always available, always quick to respond, and kept me updated regarding times etc. Also, the guides Dan (north) and Tien (mid) were just excellent, and we really enjoyed their company. The lady (whose name I have forgotten) who was our additional guide for the DMZ day was exceedingly good and made that day very special.
