Overview

This welcoming, family-run campsite is located in Amakhala Game Reserve, one of many protected areas in the Eastern Cape province. The campsite is built up on a hillside and overlooks an ancient floodplain, offering spectacular views of the reserve, which is completely malaria-free. Its ongoing aim is to provide all those who book a stay with an authentic safari experience. Guests can look forward to going out on exciting game drives, which offer the chance to spot the Big 5 and many other wild animals roaming free in their natural habitats. For many, the drives are very much the highlight of staying here.

A maximum of twenty people can be accommodate at the camp at any time. There are ten tents in total, each one housing two people. Families looking to stay here can book two adjoining tents together. All of the tents are roomy and spacious. They’re set on raised bases and come with their own private deck area, along with an en-suite bathroom consisting of a wash basin and shower (hot running water is supplied). Guests can choose between twin beds or a king size bed, with electric blankets provided on colder nights. Two of the tents are set amongst the trees, while the remaining eight are out in the open, offering views of the reserve and the chance to spot nearby wildlife. To make guests’ stay comfortable and hassle-free, all of the tents come with tea and coffee making facilities and have electricity available.

Amakhala Game Reserve was formed in 1999 when six families agreed to combine their farmland together into a single, private reserve and return the land to its natural state. The camp’s game drives take place twice daily - one in the evening and one in the early morning. Both of them are led by knowledgeable, enthusiastic guides, who are keen to showcase the reserve’s diverse vegetation, captivating landscapes and fascinating wildlife. While the drives are very worthwhile, there are other ways to see the reserve. Guests can go on leisurely horse rides along scenic trails, sail down the river on relaxing boat tours and take part in guided bush walks.

The camp has a curio shop selling an array of souvenirs and mementos, along with a swimming pool. Three meals a day are provided. Dinner consists of three courses and is served in the main dining area; guests may even have the chance to enjoy a traditional ‘braai’, a South African buffet-style barbecue.

The game drives here are only available for those aged six and above. The camp doesn’t cater for babies and children up to the age of five.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
