Peru’s Tambopata National Reserve is located in the southeast of, next to the Bolivian border and within the Amazon basin. Tambopata features exceptional wildlife and lush tropical landscapes. A stay in an eco lodge in the Reserve is one of the highlights of Peru and contrasts perfectly to time spent exploring the mountain scenery and Inca heritage around Cusco.
The Tambopata National Reserve covers over a thousand square miles and is home to a number of animal species not so commonly seen elsewhere in the Amazon; one of its key draws is the world’s largest parrot clay lick, an exposed wall of clay that parrots, macaws and other colourful birds flock to in order to feed on the clay. Climbing up into the reserve’s tree canopy is a jaw-dropping delight and atmospheric night hikes will reveal the wonderful sounds, and if lucky some sightings, of the abundant nocturnal animals.
We usually recommend a stay of 3 or 4 days, flying into the nearby city of Puerto Maldonado. The lodges here tend to offer complete packages including river transport, all meals and a schedule of activities. As a general rule, the deeper the lodge is in the Reserve, the more pristine the environment and the better the experience tends to be.
