Located in Southern Costa Rica on the Pacific coast, Uvita is the closest village to the Marino Ballena National Park and Punta Uvita. The area is famous for whale watching and its striking Coastal scenery. Uvita is roughly halfway between Manuel Antonio and Corcovado National Park and is usually either visited as a day trip from Manuel Antonio or as a place to break the long journey down to the Osa Peninsula, Golfo Dulce and Corcovado.
While some visit the area on day trips, others opt for overnight stays so as to have more time to explore the town and the national park. There are quite a few options available, including a handful of cheaper hostels and some more expensive boutique-style hotels and lodges that offer a higher quality of accommodation. Temperatures are fairly high throughout the whole year, with March usually the hottest month. The rainy season lasts from May to November, with September the wettest month of the year more often than not; since it’s also the coolest month, it tends to be one of the quieter times of the year for the area.
Near the town is the Punta Uvita, a fascinating geological formation that’s long brought people to the area. It’s a sandbar that stretches for over half a mile that very closely resembles a whale’s tail, especially when viewed from high up. It can be seen during low tide every day. What’s particularly remarkable about this is that it’s in an area where whales themselves can be seen. From mid-July to October then from December to March, a number of migratory humpback whales can very often be seen in the area. As such, whale watching expeditions are offered and are popular with both locals and visitors alike. Some of the many other activities available in Uvita include surfing and snorkelling (dry season only).
