Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose lies in the attractive Central Valley surrounded by Mountains and coffee plantations. For visitors arriving at the nearby international airport, there is a choice of staying in the City or in a more peaceful location in the Surrounding hills.
Whilst San Jose is not without charm, traffic can be heavy making it a less than practical choice after or before an International flight.
With the traffic in the City we usually recommend accommodation based on its location and ease to get you to your next destination after San Jose. The best option in the City is the Hotel Grano De Oro, a grand historic building whose rooms don’t quite live up to the impressive entrance. If staying in the city, a half day is enough to see the cluster of historic buildings followed by lunch in a buzzing neighbourhood eatery.
For most though we recommend staying outside the city where there are several good options at different budget levels, all with excellent views, beautiful gardens and swimming pool. Villa Casa Rosa is a lovely boutique option set on an organic coffee plantation. Rooms are very quirky and individual and set in lovely gardens. There is a super restaurant and swimming pool and hot tub with wonderful views. Xandari is also a real favourite of ours with beautiful views, extensive grounds with walking trails to waterfalls and 2 lovely swimming pools.
