Located in central Costa Rica roughly an hour-and-a-half outside of San Jose is Turrialba, a charming and delightful town set in a lush valley. It’s quite a laidback and relaxed settlement, but the main reason to be here is the Pacuare River, a world class rafting destination with a very special lodge.
For those with the necessary budget, the raft in Pacuare Lodge offers an incredible combination of adventure and luxury in a stunning setting. For those without the budget, day trips are possible from San Jose and can be combined with onward transport to Arenal or Tortuguero National Park.
Turrialba lies at an altitude of just over 2,000 feet. The weather can therefore be somewhat cooler than more low-lying parts of the country. Temperatures are still generally quite favourable year-round. The dry seasons typically lasts from January to March, with the rainy season lasting from May to November. September’s usually both the wettest and the coolest month, so the town doesn’t get too popular with tourists at this time of year.
