Manuel Antonio
Manuel Antonio is located roughly midway along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast and is the country’s most visited national park. As such, it can get quite crowded and busy, especially at times of the year when wildlife viewing opportunities are at their best. People come from all over the country and beyond in order to visit the park, which is known for its dramatic coastline, white sand beaches and impressive and concentrated biodiversity. This is a great place to see Sloth, Toucan, Macaw, Monkeys and Tourists in their natural habitat!
Throughout the town there are a large number of hotels built to accommodate the many tourists who come to visit the park. The hotels cater for all kinds of budget, with some aimed at those travelling on a budget and other more expensive options offering a higher standard of accommodation. Environmental restrictions have prevented hotels from being constructed directly on the beachfront; these restrictions have actually worked in the hotels’ favour, as they’re mostly set in the cliff side and command broad, sweeping views of the coast. Only a few hotels in the area are able to provide guests with direct beach access. Temperatures are quite favourable and steady year-round; the driest time of the year is from January to March, while September and October are the wettest months.
Despite its popularity, the Manual Antonio National Park is actually one of the country’s smallest national parks. But in many ways, its small size its greatest advantage, wildlife are concentrated in a small area and are consequently much easier to spot than elsewhere in the country. The park features several pristine beaches, dense rainforest and a forested area with an abundance of marked trails that cater to hikers of all skill levels. There are nearly 200 bird species and over 100 mammal species that call the park home, such as squirrel monkeys, sloths and iguanas. Morning visits are advised so as to avoid the crowds and tour groups. The park is closed every Monday, but open every other day of the week.
