Nestled in the rolling countryside of northwest Vietnam is the town of Mai Chau. It’s a decidedly rural town in pretty much every aspect and is the capital of the district of the same name. Agriculture is one of the mainstays of the district’s economy, with much of its land taken up by rich green rice paddies; this abundance of greenery is partly why the area attracts as many tourists as it does, with many visiting from afar to bask in its unspoiled landscapes and scenic views. The district lies roughly 150 metres above sea level and is some 160 kilometres from Hanoi.
The town is about as far from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi as you can get. With its more relaxed and traditional way of life and its abundance of stilt houses, it’s world away from the more tourist-oriented large cities. Having said that, the town is still very much worth visiting, especially for those keen to observe different, more rural lifestyles. While in the area, taking time to visit some of the many villages dotted about is highly recommended. Hiking and biking are both strongly recommended for those looking to explore the area further and discover its sweeping vistas.
