Located in the far north of Vietnam is Hanoi, the country’s capital city. The city proper lies on the right bank of the Red River, with numerous outlying suburban areas straddling both sides of the river. It’s the second most populous city in the country with around 7.6 million residents - a number that’s steadily growing year-on-year. Over the past few decades, people from all over the country and overseas have chosen to relocate in the city, greatly increasing its diversity. It’s very much a major metropolitan area and the country’s political centre.
The city is located inland some 90km from the coast. Its climate is typical for the Northern Vietnam area, with generally favourable temperatures throughout the year - especially in the summer months - with just over 100 days with rainfall every year. When it comes to accommodation, there’s a broad range of options available to suit all budgets, from cheap guesthouses to pricier hotel complexes. The city has a good reputation for being more affordable than others, which is partly why it’s often ranked as one of the world’s top destinations to visit.
What makes Hanoi particularly appealing is that it’s one of the world’s most ancient capitals. It’s replete with all sorts of cultural attractions that collectively showcase its rich, fascinating history. Many intrepid tourists choose to visit Hanoi because of its eclectic collection of interesting museums, centuries-old pagodas and abundance of French colonial buildings. In fact, it’s often referred to as ‘the Paris of the East’ due to the many French influences that can be seen throughout the city - its boulevards lined with trees a perfect example. Though the city is well known for its more historical offerings, it has plenty to cater for those with other tastes; it has more than its fair share of vibrant bars and clubs, high-end shops, bustling markets, local art galleries and a host of eateries showcasing local, national and international cuisine. The city is particularly renowned for its multitude of lively entertainment offerings. The countryside and mountain areas outside of the city are well worth visiting; they’re dotted with all sorts of traditional villages and smaller settlements, not to mention plenty of nature-based attractions.
