Kalahari & Makgadikgadi Pans
The Kalahari salt pan is a vast atmospheric brooding wilderness offering a true sense of isolation, with fascinating geology and history and the opportunity to visit locations where ancient rock art and hand tools have lain undisturbed since the stone age. The area, so wonderfully bought to life by Laurens Van Der Post's Lost World of the Kalahari, is a very special place that whilst not for everybody, offers explorers an unforgettable experience.
The Makgadikgadi Pans are the focal point of most visits. The Pans cover an area of 10,000m2 with salt pans interspersed with grass lands and islands of trees. There are some seriously good Camps here, activities range from bush walks and horse riding to ranging over the Pans on quad bikes and interacting with the habituated meerkats (Jack's Camp only). A real highlight is the opportunity to spend time with the remarkable Bushmen of the Kalahari walking amidst their incredible landscape.
The Makgadikgadi Pans work well in combination with the Delta for a classic Delta and Desert Safari. The wildlife in this area can be phenomenal, but is largely unpredictable and tightly correlated to the rains. During the May to October dry season, activities tend to concentrate on ranging the Pans on quad bikes, seeing the meerkats and walking with the bushmen.
