To be on foot, sharing the bush only with wildlife puts you at the very heart of the wilderness experience. The wildlife responds differently, you see such more detail and the sightings when they do come are uniquely rewarding. This experience gives you the opportunity to explore 12,000 hectares of pristine bushveld in the only wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park.
We suggest starting in Cape Town, a wonderful place to begin your experience of South Africa. Sat between the Southern Ocean and Table Mountain, Cape Town is a great City to eat, drink and explore. We include a private guided hike of Table Mountain and a private guided winelands tour with our fabulous local guides. In Cape Town, we usually recommend staying in Welgelegen, a small boutique guesthouse in a buzzing neighbourhood of Cape Town.
From Cape Town, you will fly to Kruger with two nights at Rhino Post Camp, a traditional safari camp with morning and afternoon game drives. We combine the walking safari with more traditional game drives as the exposure to wildlife is so different on foot to in the vehicle. The concession shares a 15km unfenced boundary with the famous Mala Mala and Sabi Sand reserve with an abundance of wildlife moving freely between the two reserves. The area has a reputation as an excellent game viewing area with good chances of seeing the Big Five. Rhino Post Safari Lodge is an elegant 16 bed lodge set on the banks of the Mutlumuvi riverbed with swimming pool and traditional safari atmosphere.
From Rhino Post, transfer to Plains Camp which is the base for walking. When it comes to safari guiding, walking guides are at the top of the tree, and as you walk your guide will explain bush culture, the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, birds and the medicinal uses of plants, local folklore and basic tracking and survival skills. Walks tend to last 3-4 hours and take place in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the heat of the day. Plains Camp is a simple, but very comfortable 4 tent camp with a perfect location for explorations by foot. There is the opportunity to sleep out one night under the stars in the elevated sleep-outs on a round walk from Plains Camp (the sleep-outs are dependent on weather and other guests’ wishes).
This is a tailor-made holiday and can be customised. Those with more time available may wish to consider combining with a stay in the winelands, Hermanus (during whale watching season) and a road trip along the Garden Route.

DAY 2: CAPE TOWN
This morning is an early start for your Table Mountain Hike. There is no better place to get a sense of Cape Town than from the top of Table Mountain amidst the lush Fynbos, indigenous to the region. Most tourists venture no more than 5 minutes from the Cableway, however we recommend getting away from the crowds on a guided walk. For those wanting something gentle, there is a 2 hour circular walk which involves taking the cable car up the mountain and hiking on the plateau to Maclears Beacon, the highest point on Table Mountain. The trail passes stunning viewpoints and marsh and Fynbos bush. For the more adventurous, we will arrange a more challenging trek climbing the Mountain via Skeleton Gorge or from the Twelve Apostles which will take about 6 hours. With both options, you will take the Cableway down afterwards.

There are daily flights from the UK to Cape Town & Johannesburg. London currently has three airlines offering direct flights into Johannesburg with good onward connections. There are also a number of options available from regional airports. Please get in touch for a flight inclusive quote including International flights and the internal domestic flights from Cape Town to the Kruger and then to Johannesburg.
The Kruger offers good year round safari. High season is October to March (South African summer), but the best wildlife viewing is in the South African winter (May to end of October) as the vegetation is less dense.

Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve
