This itinerary has been designed with a shorter safar to keep costs down, but if budget allows, can easily be extended by combining with a different camp in the Selous or Ruaha Reserve and of course more time at the beach.
In Zanzibar, we've chosen Breezes Beach Resort, one of our favourite resorts on Zanzibar with superb facilities and a great beach. It is somewhere you can relax to your heart's content, throw yourself into the watersports and enjoy a morning game of tennis. If you prefer, we can recommend some lovely remote low key resorts or more upmarket villas and private houses.
DAY 1: ARRIVE SELOUS GAME RESERVE
It is an easy and quick light aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam Airport into the Selous Game Reserve. The Selous Game Reserve is Africa's largest reserve and offers a slice of pristine African bush with superb wildlife populations and incredibly low densities of camps, vehicles and other tourists. The reserve has a good wildlife population with hippo, lion, elephant and buffalo all very well represented, as well as over 450 species of bird. On arrival in the Selous, you will be met by camp representative and transferred by road in open 4x4 safari vehicle into camp, game viewing en-route. Once settled into camp, you will gather late afternoon for afternoon activity. Return to camp to freshen up, have dinner and night caps around the fire.

DAY 2: SAFARI
In the Selous, guests have a choice of shared scheduled activities daily from safari drives in open 4x4 vehicles and boat trips along the river which are great for seeing hippo. Bush walks are available on request with guide and armed ranger giving you insight into the ‘smaller’ things often missed from the vehicle such as animal spores, dropping and plants (over 16 year olds only). Your day on safari traditionally starts with an early morning wake up call to head out on your morning safari activity, return to camp for brunch and afternoon siesta. Gather again late afternoon for tea before your safari activity and return to camp for dinner.

DAY 3: SAFARI
Among the activities offered at Selous Impala Camp, guests have the option of enjoying a pre booked fly camp safari. DAY 4: TRAVEL TO ZANZIBAR
After a morning safari activity and breakfast, you will transfer to the airstrip to meet your shared light aircraft flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, you will be met and transferred by road to your resort. After the early mornings on safari, it is always good to have some time taking it easy on the Coast. Zanzibar offers pristine beaches, relaxed lodges, superb diving and snorkelling and a fascinating history to explore. You may just want to kick back and relax, but if you can tear yourself away from the beach, then there are several day trips you may want to consider including a visit to the capital, Stone Town, a tour of Spice Island or a visit to Jozani Forest, home to Zanzibar red Colobus monkey, Sykes monkey, bush babies and the nocturnal Zanzibar tree hyrax.

Due to the variability in flight costs, our prices are quoted excluding international flights. We usually arrange flights for most of our clients travelling to Tanzania and have good rates, but if you prefer to book your own or use air miles, we are happy to book ground arrangements and domestic flights for you.
There are no direct flights from the UK or US to Tanzania. Direct flights are available with KLM direct from Amsterdam, Turkish direct from Istanbul, Qatar from Doha, Etihad from Abu Dhabi and Emirates from Dubai. We usually find KLM and Turkish best for North American clients with just one stop in Amsterdam / Istanbul and an overall flight time approaching 22 hours.
Kenya Airways via Nairobi is another good option with direct flights from London Heathrow into Nairobi and a short hop onto Tanzania. Qatar is an excellent option if you are combining a safari with Zanzibar as it has direct flights to/from Kilimanjaro Internatonal Airport and Zanzibar Airport, meaning you can do the outbound and return flight with just one stop to many International destinations.
3 nights safari in the Selous Private Game Reserve with all meals, local drinks, scheduled shared safari activities, park fees, light aircraft transfers and road transfers as mentioned, 5 nights in Zanzibar with breakfast and dinner.
Excludes: International Airfare to and from Tanzania/Zanzibar, visa fees, gratuities, comprehensive travel insurance, all drinks, additional activities, laundry, medical requirements such as yellow fever and malaria precautions and items of a personal nature.
January, February, July, August, September and October are the dryest months, with the Christmas / New Year period and July / August period representing peak season in Tanzania, expect flight costs to be substantially higher and we advise booking in advance for the best choice of lodges.
We usually avoid the long rains that run through March, April and May. The typical pattern during this period are tropical downpours in the afternoon / evening that usually clear in the mornings. If this is the only time you can travel then it is usually possible to get a dry spell between 10am and 2pm for getting out on safari and of course rates tend to be lower.
The short rains bring some rain during November and early December, but the rains are much lighter and much less of an impediment.
Whilst safari enthusiasts might want for a longer safari, we think this itinerary is perfect for first time safari goers and families. Of course one advantage of keeping the safari to one location and three nights keeps costs down too. All in all it is a perfect taster safari with a good combination of wilderness and wildlife with a good dose of beach relaxation at the end.
Please note, the safari camps in the Selous are open to the wildlife and as such a degree of sensible precaution must be taken. If travelling with children, you must make sure they kept under close supervision - it is not a place for them to go off playing by themselves.
