Kenya is perfect for the first family safari, the parks are easily accessible and wildlife is abundant. Assuming you’ll save that luxury splurge safari for when you are ‘sans enfant’, the focus here is on superb guiding and comfort rather than indulgent luxury.
We have designed this itinerary with a nice balance of game drives and activities, with cycling in Hells Gate National Park, a boat trip on Lake Naivasha and a once in a lifetime experience camping in a Maasai village where your children can try their hand at shooting bow and arrows, Maasai dancing and lighting fires.
The safari includes two days of game drives (one in the Maasai Mara Reserve and one in Lake Nakuru Reserve), a game walk on the Loita Plains and Hell's Gate National Park (cycling) and a boat trip to see the hippos and game in Lake Naivasha.
DAY 1: ARRIVE NAIROBI
Accommodation: Mayfair Southern Sun
Meals Included: n/a
Day Notes: You'll be met at the airport and transferred to your accommodation for a relaxed morning, with the opportunity to rest or relax by the pool. After lunch, you'll head out to visit the Giraffe Centre (a conservation institution that’s a World famous Nature Education Centre that has over the years helped in rescuing the endangered Rothschild giraffes). This visit is followed by a short drive to David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to see the baby elephants and baby Rhinos. (Entrance fees payable directly)
DAY 2: TRAVEL TO LAKE NAIVASHA
Accommodation: Sunbird Lodge
Meals Included: All meals
Day Notes: Today you'll set off from Nairobi with your guide and driver to the Rift Valley Lakes. We'll stop at Hells Gate National Park for a walking safari inside the park. Hell’s Gate is a small, beautiful park with plenty of plains game and one of the few national parks in Kenya where exploration by foot is permitted. On our bicycle safari you’ll have close encounters with giraffes, gazelles, impalas, zebras, elands, Hartebeests among others. As a highlight we descend into the gorge on foot where you are welcomed by fascinating sights of volcanic formations, geysers and hot springs. After lunch we'll take a boat ride on the nearby Lake Naivasha, which is famous for its hippos and bird life particularly fish eagles, love-birds and pelicans, disembarking at an animal sanctuary half way to walk amongst giraffe, zebra, impala, gazelle and waterbuck.

Lake Nakuru NP is a small but scenic park with abundant wildlife and an excellent chance of seeing the rare rhino, both black and white species, leopard, lion, vast herds of buffalo and the unusual Rothschild's giraffe. It has also had close to 400 species of birds recorded within its boundaries. After lunch you can choose to relax around the pool.
DAY 4: TRAVEL TO MAASAILAND
Accommodation: Maasai Eco Camp
Meals Included: All meals
Day Notes: After breakfast you are driven from Nakuru to the heart of Maasailand where hitherto few tourist have explored – here you’ll get great insights into the Masai peoples fascinating way of life. At this interesting spot known as Maji Moto there is a natural hotspring you can take a dip in or just dip your toes in. You also get to participate in cultural activities with the Maasai of this village and visit their homestead (Boma) in the evening where you’ll have a wonderful chance to take pictures of events at the Boma. From the UK: International flights from the UK to Kenya typically cost £850 - £1250 return per person depending on the airline and when you are travelling. British Airways and Kenya Airways offer a non-stop daily service between London Heathrow and Nairobi. These typically cost between £650 - £1250 return. Savings can be had if you are willing to fly indirect, with KLM, Qatar, Turkish and Ethiopian all offering competitive fairs at the expense of less convenient flight times and stop-overs.
From the US: Kenya Airways offers a non-stop daily service between JFK and Nairobi. Prices are typically between $1,000 - £1,500 per person return. Alternatively you can fly with British Airways or American Airlines via London, Delta via Paris or Ethiopian via Addis Ababa.
Price given is an indication only based on a family of four with two children under 12, actual rate depends on the season and the number of age of children. The price includes all accommodation, meals and transfers to/from Nairobi as set out in the itinerary. You will have the services of an English speaking naturalist guide and a private vehicle on safari. The price also includes all the Park fees and all camping equipment.

Kenya is a fantastic destination for a family safari. Visits are possible during all school holiday periods, with the exception of Easter Holidays which coincide with the long rains.
See our advice on holidays in Kenya during UK half term, Easter, Christmas and Summer School holidays here..
This holiday is designed specifically for families. Because you will have a private vehicle and guide to yourselves, we don't have any fixed age limits. The advantage of this is that you can choose when and where you want to stop, what animals you want to focus on and how much down time you have. Generally speaking, children aged around 6 and over will get more out of the experience than those younger. As they get older, they will have more patience for game drives and get more out of the opportunity to chat and learn from guides.
The overall level of accommodation is very comfortable, but not luxurious. The road between Nairobi and the Masai Mara is not in great condition and the 5 -6 hours return drive to Nairobi is fairly arduous. For extra cost, you may wish to consider taking a scheduled small aircraft flight.

We had an amazing trip. Everything was well thought out and so much fun. What a great way to truly see the country and learn the culture.
Joseph was the perfect guide. Very kind, professional, knowledgeable and patient. The kids loved Joseph and keep asking when will they meet him again. He found the Big 5 for us which was unforgettable! Please pass along our appreciation to Joseph.
Maji Moto was also another incredible experience. They had great customer service and we loved experiencing their culture.
Sunbird was absolutely beautiful and I wish we had more time there. We loved the view of the lake!
One suggestion to make the trip even better for other guests in the future would be to have a cooler with drinks and snacks in the Jeep at all times because a ton of driving is involved and it would be helpful to have a cold drink and snacks during the long trip.
Thanks again for organizing this experience of a lifetime for us!

We had an amazing time thank you. The itinerary was great as we felt like we saw lots of different things and it kept it interesting for our daughter. She especially loved the gorge at Hells Gate.
Unfortunately the Menengai Crater walk was a bit hard for her although that probably had something to do with how hot it was!
We especially loved the Sunbird Lodge - it is such a beautiful place and all the staff were so incredibly welcoming and friendly.
Our guide, Joseph, was exceptional too and we can’t speak highly enough of him.

Everything was exceptionally well arranged and the whole trip, from checking in on line and printing out the outward journey boarding cards from home, until return to Heathrow, was completely seamless.
Although arriving slightly earlier than scheduled, we didn't have to wait before being collected at Nairobi by Elijah, our guide and Samuel the driver. On being told that we had hardly slept at all on the outward journey, they took us to a small B&B place they use (sorry, I've forgotten the name of the place) and we were able to rest/sleep for some 3 hours before setting off on our adventure. This was very much appreciated by us as that first day was full on after that.
They looked after us really well and both were very knowledgeable and good company and were flexible to our needs, with nothing being too much trouble for them.
The accommodation you picked for us was spot on. We were particularly taken with Sunbird Lodge (I could have spent the whole week there if it were not for being on the move due to the nature of the trip), which was quite informal and extremely friendly. We then moved on to the Maji Moto Eco Camp, where again everything was fine. Having stayed in similar places before, at my age now, the one night suited well and I was surprised when Dan was so taken with the place that he would have liked to stay another night! I think the camp fire might have had something to do with it. The visit to the school was also well worth it from Dan's perspective.
On then to Ilkeliani and I concur with what you say about it being so well priced for what it offers, that it is a good recommendation. This was slightly more formal at mealtimes than Sunbird Lodge but nevertheless, the staff were equally friendly. As adults, both my husband and myself enjoyed the food although the feedback I provided on their customer satisfaction questionnaire was that perhaps the evening meals could possibly have slight variations for children. We didn't see any signs of the suspended footbridge and as we didn't ask about it, I don't know whether it's still there or not.
I have to say that the beds in both Sunbird and Ilkeliani were very, very, comfortable.
The Mayfair Southern Sun was again a good choice although I think the room we had was perhaps a standard twin room. There were two what I call "three quarters" sized beds, i.e. larger than a single but not quite a double bed size, which meant it was a bit of a squeeze for 2 persons in one bed.
Both the Giraffe Centre and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Sanctuary were ideal additions to the itinerary. We had a 10 year old who was reluctant to leave Kenya!
