Overview

Set in the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, located in the historically rich Eastern Cape and surrounded by 22 000 hectares of exclusive, malaria-free wilderness, Uplands Homestead offers guests great opportunities to interact with a wide array of game, including the endangered 'Kwandwe' or blue crane, South Africa's national bird.

Uplands Homestead is a charming colonial-style 1905 farmhouse offered on an exclusive-use basis for groups or families of up to six. Located in a tranquil valley surrounded by undulating hills, it offers three luxurious suites furnished in a double or twin configuration, each with a private terrace and en-suite bathroom and free-standing bath. Huge fireplaces, richly woven rugs, yellowwood kists and wardrobes, hand-stitched damask linen and an enviable collection of antique china, pewter, and silver from the 19th century contribute to Upland's homeliness. In addition to a contemporary farm-style kitchen and an exquisitely furnished dining area, guests can enjoy afternoon tea on the immaculately manicured front lawns, with ample space for football or cricket. A large swimming pool and gazebo sit at the far end of the lawn.

The homestead comes with a dedicated butler, chef, and ranger and tracker team, as well as a private four-by-four safari vehicle, for ultimate flexibility over your schedule. Popular activities include game drives, for sightings of the big five and other unusual species such as the porcupine, aardwolf or aardvark, and bush walks, where you can get 'up close and personal' experiences with wildlife. The Big Game Walking Safari offers the thrill of tracking rhinos, elephants and buffalo on foot, while fishing, boat trips, and volunteering activities at the Mgcamabele Community Centre can be organised in advance. For additional cost, there are options to go on a 'Save the Rhino' drive, a Rhino Conservation safari or a photographic safari, including photography workshops. To relax from the excitement of game tracking, in-room massage treatments are available.

Uplands Homestead is ideal for families with young children, with parents not having to worry about bothering other guests. The villa and grounds are fully electric-fenced for security, so parental supervision can be relatively relaxed. Sole-use villa rates are applicable to Uplands Homestead (for up to 6 guests), and with exclusive use children and families are welcome.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
