Overview

Sibuya is a highly regarded game reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. It’s known for its several hundred bird species, along with its abundance of land animals and unique series of waterways – indeed, the reserve has more navigable rivers than any other in the country. There are three accommodation options in the reserve, all of which are accessed from the main reception building in the coastal town of Kenton-on-Sea. From here, guests enjoy a scenic boat ride up the Kariega River before embarking on a game drive transfer to their choice of lodge.

Sibuya Bush Lodge actually lies just outside the main reserve area and is significantly different from its more simple sister properties Sibuya River Camp and Sibuya Forest Camp, because it’s on the electricity grid, and thus offers modern conveniences such as air conditioning, fans and hairdryers. The Bush Lodge comprises four luxury thatched units, all offering pretty good levels of privacy and plenty of interior space. Each unit comes with both an indoor and outdoor shower, a private viewing deck and tea and coffee making facilities.

The Bush Lodge is ideally located for exploring the reserve. Some of the most popular activities include Big 5 game drives and birdwatching walks with literally hundreds of species to spot. More energetic physical activities such as swimming and canoeing are available, as are more leisurely pursuits such as fishing, beach walks and river cruises. All nature-based activities are led by professional, expert guides. A good number of the activities are free of additional charge, though some, such as deep-sea fishing, tours of historic towns and spa treatments, are available at an extra cost. Back at base, there’s an enticing crystal-clear swimming pool, safe river swimming, and plenty of opportunity to unwind. All meals are served buffet-style and in the evenings - weather permitting – guests dine out in the open by the fire.

Children of 13 years and up are welcome at the lodge, and extra divans can be brought into parents’ rooms to accommodate them. While it’s rare for animals to approach humans or accommodation, parents are reminded to make sure their children are supervised by adults all the time.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
