Overview

Belvidere Manor is an historic property within the town of Knysna, in the famed Garden Route area of South Africa’s Western Cape Province. Perched above a lagoon with spectacular views, Belvidere offers bed and breakfast accommodation in 28 cottages set within spacious, verdant gardens, along with a swimming pool, restaurant, and pub. Ideally placed for the Garden Route’s glorious coastline and lush forests, Belvidere is a good mid-price option for travellers seeking tranquillity and relaxation.

Framed by the stunning Outeniqua mountains and the Cape’s distinctive heathlands or ‘fynbos’, Knysna is a nature lover’s paradise, boasting lakes, forests, and the pristine beaches of the Indian Ocean. This area is home to distinctive wildlife, including forest elephants and the endangered Brenton Blue Butterfly, whilst dolphins and seasonal humpback and southern right whales can be spotted in the ocean. The region hosts over 270 species of birds, including the African Fish Eagle and the rare African Black Oyster Catcher.

The manor’s leafy gardens boast a lovely swimming pool with loungers, and fabulous views of Knysna’s lagoon. Guests are served breakfast each day on the terrace of the main manor house. The onsite restaurant, Caroline’s Bistro, offers a two or three course table d’hôte evening menu, for which booking is essential. Also onsite is The Bell, purportedly Knysna’s smallest pub, which is open daily, serving bar meals, locally brewed beers, and Cape wines.

Activities available locally include hiking along beautiful forest trails, horse riding, mountain biking, golf, fishing, and canoeing. Thrill seekers can experience scuba diving, paragliding and water-skiing, whilst nearby Buffalo Bay is a haven for surfers. Knysna offers numerous shopping and eating opportunities, with restaurants offering traditional South African, European, and oriental cuisine. Seafood fans should visit in July, when the town holds its annual Oyster Festival.

Accommodation comprises 28 Cape style cottages, with one, two, or three bedrooms. Each cottage boasts ensuite bathrooms, a fully fitted kitchen, and a lounge with fireplace. All units have overhead fans, satellite TV, Wi-Fi and telephone. Outside is a private veranda with either garden or lagoon views.

Garden Classic cottages are single storey and sleep four guests in a double and twin bedrooms. Some units have a third bedroom to accommodate six guests.

Garden Deluxe cottages are two storey with an upstairs balcony, and sleep four guests in a double and a twin bedroom. Several larger cottages have a third bedroom and accommodate up to six guests.

Lagoon Classic cottages are single storey and sleep two guests in one double bedroom, with superb views of the lagoon.

Lagoon Deluxe cottages are single storey cottages with two double bedrooms, and wonderful lagoon views.

Children are extremely welcome, and there is a discount for guests under 12 years. The Garden Classic and Garden Deluxe cottages are a great option for families. A babysitting service can be arranged.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
