EnquireApa Villa is a small, homely beachside retreat nestled on the shores of the Indian Ocean just 8km outside Sri Lanka’s historic city of Galle. The property is located in a delightful coconut grove scattered with hammocks and pretty flowers and makes for a simple, welcoming and very reliable choice.
The accommodation comprises three handsomely furnished bungalows with a modern feel and pleasant traits of colonial architecture. Each bungalow is fully staffed and offers plenty of privacy and seclusion. There are seven suites spread across the three bungalows and all but one of them have sea views. Amenities common to all suites include air conditioning, mosquito nets over the beds, a fan fridge and a terrace with barbecue facilities. Be prepared, however, to switch off phones and computers and enjoy ‘digital detox’ in this simple, laid back retreat.
On site amenities include a swimming pool and a spa. There is no restaurant as such, so three meals a day are served by attentive staff on guests’ own private verandas. A broad range of cuisine is available, including Sri Lankan specialties along with some more familiar international choices. For dinner, there’s the option of two-course or three-course meals, and there is a main dining area where special meals for larger groups looking to dine together can be arranged.
Though the villas are right by the beach, note that the sea here isn’t good for swimming due to the water’s rather strong undercurrents. There are, however, several alternative beaches nearby that are better suited for swimming and other water-based activities. Other activities include trekking, cycling, canoeing and excursions to nearby places of interest. The city of Galle, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is easily accessible from the hotel. It’s replete with colonial-era buildings and has scores of quaint cafes, specialty restaurants and local shops, not to mention its fair share of well-preserved mosques, churches and other fascinating religious sites.
Apa Villa is very child friendly and actively encourages families to stay. Two of the suites in the Cinnamon Villa can interconnect, so they’re a good choice for those travelling with children; larger families can book a whole villa, or even all three villas, should they so wish. A babysitting service is available on request, as are children’s menus for all three of the daily meals.
We had an extraordinary time. It was magical and we couldn't hav asked or hoped for more. Thank you both so much for all of your time and assistance.

I would like to say a massive thank you for organising our Vietnam trip. The itinerary and execution were superb, as was the attention to detail. I would also like to thank the agent who was on the end of my whats app chat (I have no idea who they were!) – always available, always quick to respond, and kept me updated regarding times etc. Also, the guides Dan (north) and Tien (mid) were just excellent, and we really enjoyed their company. The lady (whose name I have forgotten) who was our additional guide for the DMZ day was exceedingly good and made that day very special.
