Overview

Noel Rodrigo took his passion for Sri Lanka’s national parks and set up ‘Leopard Safaris’ over a decade ago. He’s been fascinated by wildlife since he was young and has gone from taking friends on camping trips to developing highly rated professional camping experiences in two of Sri Lanka’s national parks: Yala and Wilpattu. The campsite at Wilpattu National Park is set in a rather remote location on the outskirts of the park, offering guests plenty of peace and quiet so that all they can hear are the sounds of their natural surroundings.

The mobile tents come in a range of sizes to suit different parties and there’s the option of booking the luxury lodge tent, which is recommended for couples. All tents have certain features in common, such as a living area with views, a flushing toilet, a private outdoor shower with hot water and solar-powered lights in keeping with the property’s eco-friendly stance. Other facilities include lounge chairs, stainless steel water bottles, fresh towels and linen and a battery-powered fan.

While game drives are a key part of the Leopard Safari experience, there are plenty of activities to be enjoyed back at camp. These include amateur photography classes, bird watching sessions, guided walks, cookery demonstrations and nocturnal stargazing sessions under the open sky. Three meals a day are served at the campsite, with set menus featuring a range of Sri Lankan dishes prepared using only locally sourced ingredients; menus can be customised on request. Meals are typically enjoyed by everyone at the campsite together, though private dining experiences can be arranged for couples.

Children from the age of three are welcome to join the safaris. There’s a package designed just for families offering reduced rates for children. The family tents are spacious and can comfortably accommodate two adults and three children. There are plenty of age-appropriate activities available at the campsite, such as footprint games, animal identification sessions and beginner’s photography walks although parents are reminded that due to the camp’s wilderness location, children must remain under adult supervision at all times.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever

  • I would like to say a massive thank you for organising our Vietnam trip. The itinerary and execution were superb, as was the attention to detail. I would also like to thank the agent who was on the end of my whats app chat (I have no idea who they were!) – always available, always quick to respond, and kept me updated regarding times etc. Also, the guides Dan (north) and Tien (mid) were just excellent, and we really enjoyed their company. The lady (whose name I have forgotten) who was our additional guide for the DMZ day was exceedingly good and made that day very special.
