Overview

Located on a 5,000 acre natural heritage site overlooking both the Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift battlefield sites, Fugitives Drift Lodge was founded by the Rattray family out of their love for Heritage Tourism. Visitors are drawn to the area because they want to understand the bloody history of the area and this is the perfect base. Guided tours are available from the lodge and highly recommended. The hard fought bloody battles are brought to life by the guides, recounting their tales while you stand in the very location where they took place. The tours are generally the full day with a stop for lunch and suitable for those over 12 years.

The main lodge is on the original family homestead with spacious en-suite cottages dotted around the gardens, all with private verandas to enjoy the views from. There is one cottage with two en-suite bedrooms and shared sitting room, which is ideal for families or friends travelling together. The lodge has a beautiful, well established garden and a fantastic swimming pool where guests can relax surrounded by spectacular views.

For families visiting with younger children, interactive tours are available for the under 12's which will involve nature walks to see non-threatening game, learning about the medicinal uses of plants, regaling stories of courage and bravery on the battlefield and visiting nearby Zulu villages. For their comfort, earlier dinners will be prepared for younger guests, hot chocolate and child minders are available on request so parents can enjoy their dinners.

Away from the battlefields, the property is also a nature reserve with a variety of plains game and birdlife and can be explored on foot, mountain bike, horse rides or simply fishing on the 20 kilometre frontage of the Buffalo River.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
